Technical Production Designer

Remote | Job #1333323

Location: Telecommute
Job Type: Contract
Compensation Range: $40 - 50 per hour

We are seeking a Lead Production Designer to serve as the core operational architect of our creative production loop. This high-impact, hybrid position requires the meticulous visual execution of a Senior Graphic Designer combined with the programmatic logic of a front-end automation developer.

Your mission is to completely transform our creative workflow from manual desktop publishing into an unattended, programmatic content supply chain. If you are a systems-thinking designer who thrives on replacing administrative friction with high-velocity automation, this role is for you.

Responsibilities:

Data-Driven Dynamic Layout Architecture
● Structured Document Management: Architect, build, and pagination-manage large-scale technical parts manuals and publications containing dense alphanumeric specifications, charts, and diagrams.
● Master Template Engineering: Build and optimize ultra-robust Adobe InDesign Master layouts embedded with complex paragraph, character, and object style hierarchies capable of formatting content dynamically.
● Variable Text Handling: Implement advanced text-containment protocols, tables, and auto-anchored graphic elements that handle linguistic expansion and contraction (e.g., translation text changes) without breaking grid layouts.

Programmatic Workflow Automation
● Pattern-Matching Execution: Leverage advanced GREP and Regular Expressions (Regex) within layout applications to perform systemic data manipulation, cleanup, and typographic styling instantly.
● Batch Processing: Construct unattended data-merge sequences that automatically map structured text data into variable layouts, transforming days of manual typesetting into minutes of automated runtime.
● Pre-Flight Strategy: Establish and enforce rigorous digital pre-flight checklists to guarantee zero-loss visual and asset integrity prior to manufacturing, web deployment, or global distribution.

Qualifications:
● Education: Bachelor's degree in graphic design or equivalent technical production experience.
● Professional Experience: 3-5 years of high-volume print production, catalog design, or data-driven technical layout production.
● Software Mastery: Elite-level, back-end command of Adobe InDesign (Data Merge, Indexing, Book compilation, GREP styles). Proficient across Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro).
● Data Literacy: Proven experience parsing and formatting raw structured data files (XML, JSON, CSV).

Top Candidates (Bonus Qualifications)

● Developer Mindset: Experience writing custom scripts via Adobe ExtendScript Toolkit, Creative Cloud APIs, Node.js, or Python to manipulate software workflows.
● Technical Nomenclature Familiarity: Prior experience handling industrial manufacturing documentation, engineering data tables, or heavy-machinery parts catalogs.
● Multi-Language Versioning: Experience managing localization production loops, including complex typographical scripts (Arabic, Thai, Tamil).

Technical Competencies
● Systemic Visual Rigor: Uncompromising eye for typographic details, alignment, optical margins, leading rules, and structural grid discipline under high-density data layouts.
● Pre-Press & Digital Compliance: Complete mastery of color spaces, link trapping, ink limits, font embedding, and archiving protocols to guarantee seamless physical and digital outputs.

Behavioral Competencies
● The Process Architect Mindset: A fundamental intolerance for manual, repetitive copy/paste work; an instinct to map, script, and automate multi-step visual workflows.
● Precision Execution: Deeply detail-oriented nature that treats a single misplaced digit, broken part number, or unmapped tag as a critical systemic failure.
● Cross-Functional Translator: Ability to stand comfortably between creative directors, technical copywriters, data engineers, and web administrators to build shared workflow efficiencies.
