Senior Packaging Designer

Atlanta, GA | Job #1363653

Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Job Type: Contract
Compensation Range: $37 - 42 per hour

We are looking for a Senior Packaging Designer to lead packaging design across our product line. In this role, you'll own packaging from concept through press-ready files for new product development (NPD) launches, line extensions, and refreshes across high-SKU product families.

The ideal candidate is a packaging specialist with deep production expertise. You think in systems, not one-offs. You can build and maintain packaging architecture that scales across hundreds of SKUs using all available efficiencies (ai, scripting, etc.)

Responsibilities:

  • Lead packaging design for NPD launches, line extensions, and packaging refreshes, from concept through final production.
  • Build and maintain scalable packaging systems, templates, and hierarchy standards for SKU-intensive product families.
  • Translate brand guidelines into clear, shelf-effective packaging that communicates product benefits, application, and compatibility at a glance.
  • Prepare and quality-check print-ready packaging files, including dielines, trapping, color separations, barcodes, regulatory and legal copy, and multilingual layouts.
  • Partner with NPD, product marketing, and sourcing to align packaging with go-to-market timelines and product specifications.
  • Manage a high volume of concurrent packaging projects and flag timeline or production risks early.
  • Support related retail work such as POP and merchandising displays when it ties directly to packaging launches.
  • Keep packaging files, dieline libraries, and asset archives organized and accessible for the whole team.

Logistics

  • Location: On-site full-time to start, then a hybrid schedule (one remote day per week) after an initial ramp-up period.
  • Employment type: Contract

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional graphic design experience, with at least 4 years focused on packaging in a retail or CPG environment.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe InDesign, plus strong Illustrator and Photoshop skills.
  • Deep knowledge of packaging production: dielines, structural files, prepress, color management, and print processes.
  • A proven track record of managing packaging for large SKU portfolios with multiple variants and a consistent system across them.
  • A portfolio showing packaging systems, not just individual pieces, with evidence of production-ready execution.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize competing launch deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, especially on regulatory copy, barcodes, and version control.
  • Comfort presenting and defending design recommendations to cross-functional partners.
  • A collaborative, team-first attitude and an interest in developing other designers.

Nice to Have

  • Experience designing packaging for power tools, hardware, or industrial products.
  • Familiarity with packaging workflow tools such as Esko.
  • Experience with multilingual or multi-market packaging (e.g., North America / LATAM).
  • Knowledge of sustainable packaging materials and design approaches.
